Emergency Services for Washington Township Residents


Are you a resident of Washington Township and need help?  

The Township Trustee can assist with food, shelter, utilities, and other necessities when no other resources are available.  Township assistance is the "last resort" help until other benefits can be processed, or can be a way to provide short-term assistance for a period of unexpected hardship.

To apply, contact our Township Office to make an appointment to talk to a caseworker about your situation and fill out an application.  If you like, to get a head start, fill out the application, but do not sign until you are in the office.    Application for Assistance.  

Please bring the following documentation: Picture ID for all adults in the household, Social Security Cards for all members of the household, Proof of ALL household income for the last 30 days, and current household expenses for the 30 days (a current copy of lease, all current utility bills, receipts, and/or bills for any other expenses). After we receive everything needed for the application, we will investigate your situation and look at short and long-term goals. We will also put you in touch with private, state, local, and federal agencies that may be able to help you, both now and in the future.  For questions, call our office at 812-327-6948.

Steps To Apply for Assistance


  1. Read the Township Assistance Guidelines to see if you qualify. 

  2. Gather the needed paperwork, such as identification, a list of expenses, and current bills. For more information, check this link for the Documentation that is Required at Your Appointment. 

  3. Make an appointment with the Township Trustee by calling (812) 325-1708 or emailing mvandeventer925@gmail.com

  4. You will fill out an application at the meeting.

  5.  If the Township is unable to help you with all the emergency assistance you need, we will do what we can and also direct you to other social services in our area.
