A Township with History

Washington Township was officially established in 1829, named in honor of President George Washington. It lies within Monroe County, which was formed in 1818 and named after President James Monroe. The land became part of Indiana through key treaties, including the Treaty of Fort Wayne (1809) and the Treaty of St. Mary’s (1818).

The township includes historic sites like Collier and Sample Cemeteries, where early settlers rest, and small unincorporated communities such as Hindustan, Modesto, and Wayport, each holding its own unique character and stories.

Cedar Ford Covered Bridge – A Piece of the Past Rebuilt

After more than 40 years without a covered bridge, Monroe County celebrated the return of one in Washington Township. The Cedar Ford Covered Bridge, originally built in 1885 by the Kennedy Brothers, now stands proudly over Beanblossom Creek, connecting North and Old Maple Grove Roads.

The 127-foot Burr Arch truss bridge was once in Shelby County but was relocated and rebuilt with care. Today, it offers a nostalgic view into Indiana’s transportation history and makes a scenic stop for visitors.
